The English Romantic Wardrobe
Vetch & Clover is a small English fashion house inspired by historical dress, the countryside and a lifelong love of beautiful clothing.
I've always been drawn to romantic silhouettes, full skirts, unusual sleeves and details borrowed from centuries past. Here you'll find natural fabrics, a little whimsy and clothes made to be worn and loved, whether with muddy boots in the garden or dressed up for somewhere lovely.
It began in the hedgerows
Long before Vetch & Clover became a clothing brand, its name belonged to a childhood memory.
When I was little, Mum and I would gather plants for my guinea pigs from around the family farm. Among their favourites were the delicate climbing vetch and the clover growing abundantly beneath our feet.
Years later, I still found myself noticing the two woven through English hedgerows. One day, the names fell together.
Vetch & Clover.
The name arrived before the business did. Perhaps fittingly, the brand eventually grew into it.
A wardrobe gathered over time
I have never thought that a beautiful wardrobe needed to be an enormous one.
I'd much rather have a collection of clothes I genuinely love wearing: a favourite blouse, a skirt that goes with almost everything, a well-cut pair of trousers and perhaps something wonderfully impractical that I couldn't resist.
That's how I like to think about the Vetch & Clover collection. Designs aren't necessarily finished with when a season ends. Favourite styles can return in new fabrics and colours, and new pieces are often imagined with the existing wardrobe in mind.
I like clothes that become familiar, that you learn to style in different ways and that feel increasingly your own.
Inspired by then. Made for now.
Historical clothing has always fascinated me, particularly the thought and ingenuity that went into its construction.
There are so many details I find myself returning to: the shaping of a bodice, the fullness of a skirt, a beautifully arranged sleeve or the clever ways a garment could be adjusted to fit.
I don't set out to reproduce historical clothes exactly. Instead, I take the elements that appeal to me and work out how they might belong in a modern wardrobe.
Sometimes the historical influence is quite obvious. Other times it's simply a detail in the cut or construction that you might not notice at first glance.
The past is just a starting point, never a rulebook.
There must always be room for whimsy
Not everything in a wardrobe needs to be sensible.
I love a practical garment, but I also think there should be room for an extravagant sleeve, a particularly full skirt or a pair of petal-shaped stays simply because they're lovely.
Some of my favourite designs have begun with an idea that seemed a little fanciful. The pleasure is in finding a way to make it wearable without losing what made it special in the first place.
We take making clothes seriously.
Dressing up, less so.
